JOB OPPORTUNITY: Residential Support Worker
SUMMARY:
Breton House in a sober living recovery home for women. The Residential Support Worker reports to the Executive Director and House Manager. The Residential Support Worker functions within legislative requirements, regulations, policies and procedures and the Philosophy, Mission and Vision of the Algoma Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Centre.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Completing general reception and office duties including:
- Cordially answering phone calls and taking detailed messages
- Responding to inquiries from residents and staffs
- Monitoring any visitors who attend the premises
- Completing assigned office tasks, such as document preparation using the computer and photocopying
- Regular housecleaning tasks such as dusting, vacuuming, laundry, cleaning kitchen and bathrooms, and other cleaning tasks as assigned and ensuring compliance with APH protocols and updates
- Supervising residents during completion of their assigned therapeutic duties and chores and maintaining a fair, rotating schedule
- Shopping for, carrying and unpacking groceries
- Identifying and reporting any maintenance concerns
Performing health and safety duties including:
- Having full knowledge and understanding of all Health and Safety policies and procedures and the ability to implement as necessary
- Performing routine health and safety checks and reporting any concerns
- Ensuring the facility is safely locked down each night prior to end of shift
- Monitoring/reviewing video cameras to identify safety concerns when needed
Completing cleaning and maintenance duties including:
- Regular housecleaning tasks such as dusting, vacuuming, laundry, cleaning kitchen and bathrooms, and other cleaning tasks as assigned and ensuring compliance with APH protocols and updates
- Supervising residents during completion of their assigned therapeutic duties and chores
- Identifying and reporting any maintenance concerns
Providing client supervision including:
- Interacting with clients, making every effort to understand, interpret and respond to their needs Assessing situations, events or conditions in the facility that interfere with the ability of residents to attain their recovery goals
- Assisting residents in overcoming daily obstacles and referring them to counselling staff for follow-up
- Assisting residents with conflict resolution
- Providing an activity (monthly) that residents can participate in
- Keeping a daily Journal to record activities, concerns, observations, etc.
- Taking the appropriate action if a resident has been drinking and/or using drugs
- Report to the Team Lead and/or Executive Director any concerns that require further investigation or response
Other duties as may be assigned from time to time up to and including supporting our program, A New Link, with child minding or other tasks
HOURS OF WORK:
Hours of work for the Residential Support Worker can be varied and occur at different times of the day or week. The Residential Support Worker will be expected to work days, evenings, weekends and night shifts. Flexibility regarding hours of work will be essential. The Counsellor hours occur during the day Monday to Friday. Work schedules are developed on a monthly basis.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to be consistent and display a positive/helpful attitude;
- Flexibility required to keep pace with an ever-changing environment;
- Stamina, sensitivity and strong communication skills;
- Willingness to accept changes in workplace practices and technology;
- Ability to use good judgment in assessing difficult situations;
- Ability to de-escalate conflict and enforce house rules;
- Ability to work alone and as part of a team;
- Experience working in rehabilitation centre or congregate living setting or other relevant experience equivalency;
- Experience working with women with addictions will be considered an asset;
- Diploma or degree in social services or related field a strong asset;
- Physical ability / stamina to respond quickly, appropriately and calmly to crisis and emergency situations;
- Excellent organizational skills and time-management skills;
- Excellent computer skills and
- Ability to report and attend work regularly;
- Certified in First Aid and CPR;
- Bilingualism will be considered an asset;
- Must have a clear vulnerable sector criminal record check upon employment.
- Office administration skills considered an asset
